Research Objectives

To discover the linage (parents, grandparents, etc.) of your father, John Simpon Doe.

Introduction

Reaching back into the early 1800s, most of John Simpson Doe’s ancestral lines resided primarily in Missouri.  When John was a child his immediate family spent several years in New Mexico.  John’s father, John SR had also spent time in Mississippi as a teenage.  One of his grandmothers, Nancy Orr, lived in Illinois for a while, and the other, Sarah Jane Carr, had move to Missouri from Kentucky.  Life in this part of the country was especially tough during this period.  Missouri Governor, John R. Ashcroft, explains it as such:

Tornadoes; blizzards and ice storms; thunderstorms, torrential rainfall, and floods; droughts, plant diseases, and insect infestations; earthquakes; cholera, dysentery, smallpox, and influenza and other epidemics shaped Missouri history. Frequent floods of the two largest river systems in North America, which bisect and border the state, have caused extensive economic and agricultural damage. . . . Located on the northern edge of the Great Plains tornado belt, Missouri has endured numerous historic tornadoes. The worst tornado in U.S. history, the 1925 Tri-State Tornado, began in Moore Township in Shannon County at 12:40 p.m. on March 18th, killing at least eleven people before dissipating four hours later in Indiana. St. Louis was devastated by the third deadliest tornado on May 27, 1896 with 255 people killed. Missouri’s history as a transportation hub for a transient population contributed to the spread of disease in the region. This, coupled with inadequate medical knowledge of the causes of contagious disease, linked with poor sanitation awareness resulted in widespread outbreaks of cholera, dysentery, smallpox, influenza, and other diseases. Farmers and ranchers imported cattle to stock their herds and sometimes these cattle were diseased. Flood years were often followed by periods of drought. Rocky Mountains locusts swarmed Missouri farms in the mid-1870s and destRoy ed crops and vegetation. The New Madrid Seismic Zone covers parts of Missouri, Arkansas, Tennessee, and Kentucky. From December 16, 1811 through February 7, 1812, three earthquakes struck the zone. Rated the strongest seismic events in eastern U. S. history, the earthquakes changed the course of the Mississippi River, toppled chimneys in Louisville, and rang church bells in Boston.(1)

Not only was it a hard life that ended many lives prematurely, the harsh conditions often resulted in lost archived documents.  Unfortunately, due to various floods and disasters over the last two hundred years many of the records we hoped to find have been lost.  Nevertheless, I was able to collect a rather impressive set of documents to unveil a good portion on your father’s paternal and maternal ancestral lineage.  Although I could not find birth records for many of your ancestors, I was able to approximate their birth dates from various census records.

Clara Rhonda Walker(7,8,9,10,11)

Marriage(12)

Children(13)

John was born in Moore Township, Oregon County, Missouri on November 19, 1906.  He was the youngest of ten children, the two oldest were half siblings from his mother’s previous marriage.  We don’t know the causes or the exact dates of his parent’s deaths, but John was still a child when his mother, Sarah Simpson, died; and still a teenager when his father, John SR, passed away.(21)  Sometime in the early or mid 1920s John relocated to Southern California, where his older brother, Walter B, had already relocated to Holtville, in the Imperial Valley, were he managed a dairy farm.(22)  By 1930, Harry (along with his wife, Grace, and sister, Flora) had relocated to San Diego where they are living with Arizona’s mother, Elvira Burton.(23)  By this time, John had also arrived in San Diego.

Clara Rhonda Walker was born in La Mesa, San Diego County, California, on February 1, 1909.  John and Jane were married on October 25, 1928.  Their first son, William Harvey, was born June 24, 1929.  From the census data of 1930, and the city directory in 1934, we know they rented a house in San Diego and that John was working as a salesman for Poultry Carpenter Company.(24,25)  John Thomas was born October 16, 1932, and Roy Edward on April 8, 1935.

By 1940 the growing family had moved to El Cajon where they purchased their own home.(26)  John was now working as a janitor at the Consolidate Aircraft Corporation,(27) and Joyce Rhonda was born in 1941.  Sometime in 1946 the family left El Cajon and moved north to Humboldt County.  We know from various City and County Directories that for the next few years, John work as a laborer, a tallyman, and a wielder in Eureka, Arcata, and Blue Lake.(28,29,30,31,32)  Here, in Humboldt County, Laura Ann was born in 1948.  The family eventually moved to Jackson County, near Talent, OR.(33)

John SR Doe(34)

Sarah Simpson(35,36)

Marriage(37,38)

Children

Grandfather John SR was born in Missouri, 1868, and Grandmother Nancy Jane Orr was born in Kentucky, 1869.  Nancy had a previous marriage to a preacher’s son, Thomas Wright Carpenter, Jr, Dec 28, 1884.  He was about 17 and she was 15 years old.  They had two daughters, Maud 1886, and Lillian Jane 1888.(49)  Records show that Thomas Wright Carpenter, Jr, died in 1888 at 21 years of age.

The first official record of John SR appears in the 1870 census for Santa Fe, Alexander County, IL; he is 2 years old.  He, his mother, Nancy Jane Doe, and his 7 years old sister L.A. (possibly supposed to be Ellie but recorded incorrectly by the surveyor) are living with Nancy Jane’s brother, Samuel Orr.(50)  While this is the first record of John SR, it is also the last recorded event of his mother, Nancy Jane.  In the 1880 census, 13 year old John SR is living as a boarder in the household of Benjamin Barnett in Tywappity, Mississippi.  Next door is John SR’s half uncle, Rev. James Doe and wife Laura Martin.  Their house is filled with 7 children of their own, one of which is also named John SR.(51)

Nancy’s first appears in the 1880 Census for Morley Township, Scott County, Missouri.(52)  She is said to be 13 years old; but for three reasons she is more likely about 10 years old:

1) She is not listed in the 1870 census.(53)

2) In the 1900 Census, her birth year is recorded as 1870.(54)

3) Her father, Robert F Simpson, seems to have died or at least left the family around 1870.

Whatever her actually age is at the time of the 1880 census she is living with her mother Sarah Jane, her older brother, Samuel, her step father William Crawford, and her step brother, Abraham.(55)  As we go backwards in time, we find her surname “Orr” spelled differently in various documents: thus, Key, Simpson, and Orr.  This is not uncommon, especially since the census forms are filled out by a surveyor rather than the individuals themselves.

John SR and Nancy were married on March 13, 1890, in Morley, Missouri.(56)  She was 20 or 21 years old and he was about 23.  As noted above, together they had 8 children: Franklin 1892, Harry 1894, Flora 1896, Harold 1898, Calvin 1899, Martha 1903, Jack Mason 1904, and John 1906.

They were farmers who rented land throughout the early years, which might account for their frequent moves: From Morley, Missouri, 1890, on to Moore Township, Missouri, by 1900.(57,58)  Then, by 1910, like so many others, they settled in New Mexico, where the population had grown more than 67% from 195,310 to 327,301 over the last ten years.  Here, they purchased land of their own in Yeso.(59)

Yeso started of as a budding settlement, even sporting its own post office; but it soon became apparent to the whole community that neither the dry climate nor the chalky soil was suitable for farming.  Thus, in Spanish the word for gypsum or chalk is yeso.  Finally, like the other farmers, the Does eventually left the land to the sheepherders.(60)  Today, Yeso is a ghost town.

In 1920 we find the family in Fort Sumner, New Mexico.(61)  Sadly, even more devastating than the poor climate and poor soil, Nancy had passed away at some time before the February 1920 census.  By June of 1920, John SR was living with his daughter, Flora, in Tulsa, OK.(62)  There is no further record of John SR, but family history has him dying about 1922.
